Memorial Day 2008
A Statement by
Rear Admiral LeRoy Collins Jr.
Regarding Memorial Day
On Memorial Day, I encourage all Floridians to join me in remembering, honoring and saluting all servicemembers, who for more than 230 years, have answered the call of duty with their selfless service and sacrifice. Let us not forget the families of our veterans and servicemembers, who themselves, through their support and love, embody selfless service and sacrifice. Thank you for your service.
Memorial Day is a special day reserved to express gratitude for our departed soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, Coast Guardsmen and Merchant Mariners. It is a time to rededicate ourselves to advancing their unfinished work by never losing sight of and never forsaking the noble cause for which they were prepared to give their last full measure of devotion. Their example of strength and perseverance and sense of duty gives us resolve.
Let us always remember that freedom is not free. In each generation, brave men and women have always stepped forward to take the oath of allegiance as members of Americaís armed forces, willing to fight and if necessary die, for the sake of our freedom and for the sake of our children and our nationís future. We are truly a blessed nation and a blessed state. This is not just another extended weekend for the beach; I pray that parents will explain to their children THIS is the time to thank God for those members of our U.S. Armed Forces who have died after serving our nation.
