See What 50 Years Will Do

From my perspective as a 72 yr-old, I find this attached discussion humorous...as well as sad. Can our lives have changed SOOOOOO MUCH in my lifetime?

I got whippings from my father using his belt, or a switch broken off in the yard...and promptly defoliated in "sharpening" the weapon for use. It hurt at the time, and was temporarily degrading, but the severity of the punishment was typically understood….sometimes calculated (i.e. risk vs. reward), and always deserved. In later puberty it hurt less, but I yelled anyway...and louder...to lessen the duration.

I do not ever recall using anything to strike my boys other than my open hand, and that usually took the form of grabbing them by the shirt to suspend them in mid-air kicking and screaming. I do not believe our girls ever provoked me enough to physically restrain them.

One time I wrestled with Edward, and pinned him after considerable struggle. It was then I discovered he was going to grow larger than me, so I had best learn more persuasive psychological methods of family discipline. The transition to reason was a defining moment in maturity...for both of us.

Being a good parent may be the toughest and most responsible job on the planet, …..especially for a single mom. Everybody approaches it differently. Just as long as they do not give up trying, that may be the most we can ask for. Yet some fail, and those are tragic. The way that works seems to require an abundance of understanding, patience, …..and limitless love. /s/ LeRoy Collins
